In other news, a very cute, comics makin' Canadian came down to go to Zombie Prom (we're the couple slow dancing in the first photo in that article!) with me and has been terribly encouraging towards me about all things comics and collaborating... Which, after a lousy and unexpected break up in November, has been just what I need. I mean, if I was nervous about collaborating before, you can only imagine how getting unexpectedly dumped by someone I (used to) respect (and was having a really fun relationship with) for not collaborating only increased any nervous feelings I had about collaborating... But even with the increased nervousness, The Canadian (Also known as Jeff) is communicative and sweet enough to push me in the right direction. Jeff was here for almost four days and my housemate (Ashley, who is way nicer and laid back than my previous housemate) loaned Jeff his bike, so he and I got to bike around Portland a bit. Our adventures revolved mainly around eating out, helping a few of my friends with zombie makeup before zombie prom, and karaoke. Jeff also took it upon himself to assemble my drawing table (recently purchased at Ikea with Dave and Shads) on a lazier day when we were hanging out at my house and I was answering a fuck ton of Portland Zine Symposium emails. Since then, I assembled the cushy chair I got to go with it and I now have a nice creative workspace going on in my room... Jeff plans to be back down in Portland for PZS, too.

Another cool thing Jeff assembled for me was a mini comic to go with a mix cd he brought me.. It's basically full of little, tall tales about me. Here is a couple fun images from it..

Speaking of really supportive, sweet people, in only a few short days, a very dear friend and romantic entanglement is returning from traveling in India, Jesse. I am terribly excited to have him around again and look forward to all this camping he's claiming to want to do once her returns..

I am really enjoying life right now. New house is working out really well (we're looking to fill a room at the beginning of June, by the way), I have more than one fulfilling, deep romantic relationship going on (and I used to think one was impossible, In just over a week I will be going up to Olympia for Olympia Comics Festival with Katy Ellis O'Brien (are any of you going?), and I am excited to nanny by bike all summer and teach comics workshops.

I'm totally in Chicago..

I am in Chicago! I got here Wednesday. I watched the debates at the CHM with friends here, but thanks for all the invites out to watch the debates, Portland friends.

I am here until the 28th and I miss you, Portland, but I am so happy to be here. A couple of Portland friend are visiting too.. Brianna made plans to come with me, she's arriving today and she'll be here all weekend. Myrrh is heading out soon, too. If you're in Chicago, give me a call and let's do coffee/lunch/whatever.

If you're curious how it is here, I will be sending photos from my phone to a Chicago trip flickr set quite a bit, as well as uploading them from my camera on the regular.

Also, I am turning my twitter feed on today for the duration of this trip. Try not to cry about it, Chris Faux.

i haven't gotten out of portland in too long. don't get me wrong, i love portland, but it's about time i hit the road for a spell..

olympia comics fest is happening this saturday and i've never been to olympia. not only should the olympia comics fest be fun, it will be a good opportunity to do some networking for both the portland zine symposium and sequential art gallery.

so, i am not only going to hit up the fest on saturday, but i plan to head out friday night and stay saturday night.. i may even stay sunday night, depending if i find a friendly enough floor willing to accommodate me for so long. i am going to try to bring my bike, but it may depend on what bus or rideshare i can find as to whether or not i bring it.

anyone else going up to olympia for the fest? anyone have secrets of olympia to share?

back.

by the way, i got back into portland from san francisco late monday night. the trip was great, though physically and emotionally exhausting. i ate at some yummy places, played frisbee while hanging out at an awesome park, went to the cartoon art museum, walked around a lot, stayed in a big house in the mission, practiced my spanish a tiny bit and managed to miss critical mass (which i was going to try for the first time) because of a flat tire on the bike i was borrowing. fate?

i started to go back through all the lj entries on my friends list that i missed, but there were so many that firefox said "o rly?" and then exploded on me, so i just don't think i will. if i missed anything, please tell me.

in other news, i received the rest of the photos from project slinky, rad! i can't wait to do the next art u so positive! project, which is coming up soon..

back from the bay area. i got yesterday and spent a much needed evening with ankur.

i had a lot of fun with stephanie and was really glad to have her company for this trip. especially since my friend geoff has turned into someone i don't know anymore, wrapped around the manipulating, little finger of an ex girlfriend who screams and yells at him and makes everyone in their house uncomfortable. yikes. i was talking with his housemates and his friends (i talked with them more than i did with him) and they all basically said "[we] wish [we] could say the things you say to geoff, but [we] feel [we] don't know him as well as you and [we] also would have to put up with [the totally mean girl the uses geoff], because she lives here too." i tried to be a good friend to him while i was there, i fixed his bike tire and brought him some things.. but i also told him just what i thought about his relationship with the ex and what she does to him, how it reminds me of the things his mom and another girl have done to him. he was pretty mad at me and really didn't want to hear it, but i have about zero ability to enable other people's negative behaviors. especially if i care about them.

stephanie and i did a lot of exploring around san francisco, berkeley and oakland. we walked several hours each day and took lots of photos. i liked traveling with her, i didn't know her that well really, so there were interesting things to discuss and she is a very, very sweet lady. she was also flexible about eating at places with vegan options and going to sfmoma with me.

photos soon.

every time i leave portland, i am always really ready to come home by the time my trips approach completion. i've never felt like that about a city until moving here, but i love this place. also, seeing a good friend losing himself reminds me about how important healthy love is, the kind of love where you nurish each other, support each other. how important it is to find a person that your friends are happy to see you with and having the kind of relationship that motivates you to be a better person, not one that drags you down and makes life feel overwhelming.

we're in oakland, been hanging out in downtown berkeley and san francisco and it's been super fun. on wednesday we got on the bart at noon to go to downtown san francisco and we didn't come back on the bart until 11 pm. all that time we were just walking and walking around everywhere, with only a couple sit downs (a meal, some tea, outside city hall). it was, like, ten hours of walking!

anyways, go to pdxpopnow.com/requests to request katie and ryan's band, cemetery love club. while your there, you might as well request the unit breed (joe demaree's band), the new bloods (cassia's band), we quit and the blow. please? these are all bands i like and/or know. i want them! even if you don't live in portland, do it anyway. for me. thanks!

hope you're all awesome!

you know what i love about portland?

i am sitting on the train and i have several wireless points to access. that's right, i am totally posting from the train, waiting to leave portland. i think most the signals are from the yards at union station apartment complex right next door.

portland is so cool.

well, turns out someone needs me to babysit for them monday morning, so i probably won't be leaving for berkeley before tuesday. this is probably best, means i won't miss d&d sunday night and i can spend monday getting some art supplies... what's kind of a bummer is that there were a lot of people offering rideshares for sunday down to the bay area, but no offers for tuesday... yet... there is one guy from craigslist going down on wednesday, which is a good backup plan. thanks for all of your opinions though, feel free to keep them coming. : ]

i think i deserve a little vacation..

i knew that the main family i work for was going to chicago, but i didn't realize that the dats were already approaching! they're gone all next week and babysitting is slow next week too.. sooo, i was thinking i could take a little, cheap vacation. my friend geoff lives down in berkeley and has said i can have full use of his couch. if i go there it means i just have to pay for a train ticket (or gas money for a rideshare, craigslist?), food and whatever. nice and cheap... still giving me room for that printer purchase that i still haven't decided on and the laminator purchase. i would probably go trot around san francisco for a day or two while down there, too. i have never been to berkeley or san francisco as an adult, so i think it could be cool to check out.

don't go anywhere, save the money you'd spend on a train and eating out - though estimated at a mere $150 at most - and spend time working on art for one of your books (you really should do one for yourself)..
3 (12.5%)

spend some time working on art for one of your books, then leave for berkeley tuesday.
4 (16.7%)

leave for berkeley on sunday, you could always work on some of the art there too!
17 (70.8%)

i have a better idea! go to [place i will detail in a comment] for your vacation, it would be cheap to visit too!
1 (4.2%)

don't leave for berkeley until tuesday because i will miss you too much.
0 (0.0%)

don't go to berkeley at all because i will miss you too much.

sunday, we woke up around 10am nyc time, 7am portland time. it felt like portland time and we were sluggish getting out of the hotel, but we finally did. we grabbed a bagel at a small deli and, to my pleasant surprise, the place had tofu cream cheese! not just tofu cream cheese, but several kinds (plain, scallion, tomato, vegetable)! after that, we made our way to moma! walking around moma was awesome and we happened to catch the dada exhibit! most everything was just amazing and the museum had two dali pieces (my fav) along with several miro, rembrandt, picasso, monet... i'll let the pictures i plan to post later speak for the amazingness of moma...

after that we walked around a bit, then took the subway to lower manhattan to walk around more, looked around the time square area (pictures later). around there we saw some sweet black street musicians rockin' the block (pictures later), then had dinner at zen palate. after dinner, we walked around a bit and made our way toward the empire state building.

the empire state building was pretty interesting, but very touristy (of course! right?). you know how at theme parks they have cameras to take your picture while you're on a roller coaster, so that they can try to get you to buy it when you get off the ride? well, at the empire state building, they have you go through a long line to take one elevator up to some point, then another long line to have your picture taken in front of a green screen (which i don't think you can refuse..?), then up another elevator so that you're at the main observatory (there's another one higher up that you can pay more money to go to), you walk around and observe the city and whatever until you're ready to go own, you wait in a long line to take an elevator part way down, then wait in another line where they try to sell you the picture of you they took earlier (where you discover that green screen background became a cheap empire state building background), wait in another line to get back to the ground floor and then you leave.

after all the empire state building madness, john and i headed back to out hotel, via the subway. at the subway station, we saw a couple of bucket drummers! there is only one group in portland that i know of that does bucket drumming and they're alright... but i've missed the kind of drummers i'd see in chicago and drummers in the subway on sunday reminded me of those i've seen before. there was a man and a woman (pictures later) and had the most buff arms!
and that was day two!
