olympia comics fest: my plans for this weekend.
i haven't gotten out of portland in too long. don't get me wrong, i love portland, but it's about time i hit the road for a spell..

olympia comics fest is happening this saturday and i've never been to olympia. not only should the olympia comics fest be fun, it will be a good opportunity to do some networking for both the portland zine symposium and sequential art gallery.

so, i am not only going to hit up the fest on saturday, but i plan to head out friday night and stay saturday night.. i may even stay sunday night, depending if i find a friendly enough floor willing to accommodate me for so long. i am going to try to bring my bike, but it may depend on what bus or rideshare i can find as to whether or not i bring it.

anyone else going up to olympia for the fest? anyone have secrets of olympia to share?

I went to the Olympia Comics Fest last year with [info]indy1725 and had a good time. Chris [info]unrendered made us dinner, and it was delicious. I don't know any folks up there well enough to ask them for floor space on your behalf, but I'm sure you'll work your numerous connections and find something!

on the website it says it's at the vault, 425 franklin st. se.

i can only imagine that olympia, a popular college town, must consistently be undergoing change.. is there anything you're particularly nostalgic for? what was it like to grow up there?

The Vault is a bar inside a former bank. It's right next door to the Capital Theater, which is a fantastic old vaudeville theater that currently houses the Olympia Film Society. I went to hundreds of rock shows there in the early-to-mid-90s. In the other building on that parking lot is the former location of K Records, where I worked for a few years. My high-school debate partner was electrocuted painting graffiti on the back of the theater. That block is home to a substantial part of my nostalgia.

If I were showing someone around down there we'd look at those places. We'd walk through the train tunnel a couple blocks south. There's a parking lot a couple blocks east where there's an artesian well pumping great fresh water 24-7. Up the hill a bit more is a large graffiti Star Wars mural (that's been there for probably 15 years now). Walk the other way downtown to the waterfront. They've been gradually turning the space between the end of Budd Inlet and Capitol Lake into a park.

There's lots more but it's hard to say how much would translate to an unguided tour.

I used to have a friend who was from Olympia. Other than that I have nothing. Have fun!
